In response to the various concepts and initiatives being publicly promoted that would directly impact on Israel’s identity as a Jewish and democratic state, we at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem feel it imperative to address the entire University community- students and academic staff alike- of our firm commitment to continue to uphold values of #equality, #liberty, #freedom and #respect for our fellow humans.
Living in a #civilsociety, it is incumbent upon us to denounce any forms of sectorial speech intent upon creating superiority, or messages designed to alienate any specific groups or populations from within the fragile fabric that is our modern Israeli society.
As the world’s leading Israeli university, we cannot condone or stand silent in the face of those populist or extremist efforts that are increasingly appearing within the political discourse – and pervading our daily lives.
At this moment, it is therefore critical that we express our firm and unwavering disgust and opposition in the face of such extremism, and pledge to do all that is necessary to encourage a more tolerant dialogue in acceptance of the other.
As the University President, Rector and CEO we implore all of you: Do not allow voices of extremism to influence that commitment to diversity in our times – nor the diversity that will define the very future of the State of Israel.
